Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. striga, athletes foot or achilles heel?
(2007)Parasitic weeds are major contributors to hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity across sub-Saharan and northern Africa by reducing crop yields in half. Over twenty million hectares of cereal grains in sub-Saharan Africa are infested with Striga (witchweed). Food production losses due to Striga in African countries range from 20% to 90%, amounting to over 10 million tons of food lost annually. The control options for Striga are currently ineffective and management possibilities for these weeds ... -

Baseline study for impact assessment of high quality insect resistant cowpea in West Africa
(2008)Cowpea is the most important grain legume and fodder crop in the dry savannas of Africa. Grown on more than 12.5 million hectares, grain yields from improved varieties are higher than local varieties, but require 2 to 3 insecticide sprays to control major pests compared to local varieties. Losses due to Maruca alone reach 80% and so far resistance to Maruca has been limited. To address some of these challenges the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has initiated a project which ... -

The status of cassava mosaic disease, cassava begomoviruses, and whitefly vector populations in Nigeria
(2005)A diagnostic survey was conducted in 2002 and 2003 to determine the status of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava mosaic begomoviruses in Nigeria and to ascertain if the virulent Ugandan variant of the East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV-Ug2) is present in the country. The survey was an activity of a CMD project on measures to protect cassava production in Nigeria from potential devastating effects of a severe form of the disease. Routes were selected in states of the six geopolitical ... -

Achievements in impact assessment of agricultural research: IITA experience, 2001-2006
(2006)The purpose of this document is to take stock of the achievements of and gaps in impact assessment (IA) research at IITA since the last External Program and Management Review in 2001 and to highlight elements of a strategy for the future of impact studies at the Institute. Our vision of IA is that it is a continuous process. It covers a wide range of interrelated activities including baseline studies, ex ante impact, on-farm technology evaluation, adoption studies, and ex post impact. IITA has ... -
Contribution of soil quality to banana yield problems and its relation with other banana yield loss factors
(2005)In Uganda, highland banana yields (5-30 t ha-1yr-1) are low in comparison to potential yields (70 t ha-1yr-1) due to high pest and disease pressure, soil fertility decline, and poor management. Although it is generally accepted that soil exhaustion is a major cause of low and declining yields, there are almost no data to demonstrate this relationship. Most studies show that banana soils are relatively fertile and often contain sufficient nutrients for optimum growth. Nonetheless, K, N and Mg ...
