Soil fertility management in sub-Saharan Africa
(Springer, 2017)Most of the population in sub-Saharan Africa depends on agriculture for livelihood, which is mainly practiced by resource-constrained smallholder farmers. Due to persistent low crop yields, food and nutrition insecurity, farmers have been opening new lands through deforestation or encroachment into marginal lands where possible, seeking for additional yields, which has aggravated soil erosion, land degradation, and eutrophication of water bodies. Adoption of integrated soil fertility management ... -
Pigeonpea sterility mosaic emaraviruses: a journey from a mysterious virus to classic emaraviruses
(Springer, 2017)Sterility mosaic disease (SMD) of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) first reported in 1931, is an economically most important viral disease, which is endemic to India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. SMD was long suspected to be a viral disease, however its causal agent, pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV) was discovered only in 2000. In 2013, the full genome of PPSMV was sequenced and based on the genome organization the virus was assigned to the genus Emaravirus. In 2015, association of ... -

Effects of basal medium and plant growth regulator regimes on meristem and nodal cultures in white yam (D. rotundata)
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2017)Yam production is constrained by the limited availability and high cost of quality seed due to its slow vegetative propagation ratio. Micropropagation using nodal and meristem explants have been used to produce clean plantlets, with a 1:4 multiplication ratio for nodal explants and 1:1 ratio for meristem explants, the latter taking 6 to 24 months before plantlet regeneration. The effect of six hormone-free basal medium compositions, made of Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium and Gamborg’s B5 ... -

Bananas and Plantains (Musa spp.)
(2017)Bananas and plantains are one of the most important crops in the world, yet very few hybrids are cultivated. Bananas face considerable pressure from multiple biotic and abiotic stresses, but its genetic improvement is impeded by constraints on seed set due to multiple physiological and reproductive issues. The triploid nature of almost all commercially important bananas requires a complicated breeding scheme involving cross hybridization across ploidy levels and results in poor seed set that reduces ... -
