Constraints on cassava and yam research and production in Africa
(1988)The major tropical root crops cassava (Manilwt esculenta Crantz) and yams (Dioscorea spp.)-are widely grown and are mostly used as subsistence staples in many parts of the tropics and subtropics in Africa. They are the major source of energy for well over 200 million people on the continent. The leaves of cassava are often used as a vegetable providing protein, vitamins and minerals. -
Screening for Acyanogenesis in cassava: IITA Technical Bulletin No 4
(1974)The sodium picrate test for hydrocyanic acid was used (0 evaluate BB.S10cassava plants for cyanogenic content. Acyanogenic plants were not found in spite of the large number of plants rested. A small number of plants exhibited low to medium degree of cyanogenesis while the rest of [he plants showed a high degree of cyanogenesis. The screening method is simple and sensitive and lends itself to large •scale field screening. -
