Cyanide toxicity and cassava research at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria
(1973-01)Because of IITA's interest in cassava utilization by humans and livestock, selection for acyanogenesis will be an important objective of the cassava-breeding program. Selection for acyanogenesis will be based on finding cassava lines that lack the glucoside, glucosidase, and/or the glucoside and glucosidase. While stressing the importance of acyanogenesis, other important objectives of the program will be the retention of features such as resistance to insects and diseases in acyanogenic cassava plants. -
Adaptability of rice to upland and irrigated conditions: Conference Conference Proceedings of papers presented at the 15th Annual Conference of the Science Association of Nigeria 17th22nd March, 1974, Lagos
(1974-03)In April 1973 twelve rice cultivars were concurrently planted under upland and irrigated conditions. The ratio of grain yields under irrigation to those under upland conditions ranged from 1.16 to 6.31. Those with a high No" I adaptability ratio Here considered to have narrow adaptability. Those with relatively low ratio and with acceptable yields under both conditions. -
Some factors affecting soybean viability and emergence in the lowland tropics
(1975-08)Seed viability and emergence is one of the most important problems affecting soybean production in West Africa. Results from the multi-location yield trials indicated that introduced cultivars such as Bossier, Jupiter and Improved Pelican showed excellent adaptation and high yields provided seedling emergence was high and plant population was optimum. Diseases and insects are as yet not a major problem. An integrated approach on soybean emergence problem has been carried out by the IITA physiologist, ... -
