Responding to banana xanthomonas wilt amidst multiple pathogens and pests
(2007)Xanthomonas wilt (BXW) is the most serious threat to sustainable banana production in East and Central Africa. Before the advent of BXW major biotic constraints were black leaf streak (Sigatoka), Fusarium wilt, bunchy top and streak viruses, weevils and nematodes. The rapid spread of BXW has diverted attention from the other biotic constraints, which, unlike BXW, rarely cause total yield loss. In addition, there are resistant varieties for most biotic constraints of banana, but not for BXW. Although ... -
Plant pathology activities supported by CIALCA
(2008)The request for this training was initiated by L’Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi(ISABU), who invited IITA to provide tuition and materials for the production and use of semiselectivemedia for banana Xanthomonas wilt (*see box below). ISABU wanted to create the capacity toindependently diagnose and culture BXW from diseased banana plant samples.IITA were already working on BXW in Burundi under the Crop Crisis Control (C3P) projectmanaged by Catholic Relief Service (CRS). IITA and CRS ... -
Knowledge improvement and social benefits among STCP farmer field school participants in Cameroon
(2007)Gaps in the farmer field school literature and mixed results do not allow for conclusions to be reached about the efficacy of the approach, especially in Africa where there are few mature farmer field school (FFS) programs. A case study of farmers who attended cocoa integrated crop and pest management (ICPM) farmer field schools operated by the Sustainable Tree Crops Program (STCP) in Cameroon and non-participating farmers provides empirical evidence on three issues: the effectiveness of FFS ... -
An evaluation of farmer field school training on the livelihoods of cocoa farmers in Atwima District, Ashanti Region, Ghana
(2006)This report presents findings on the effects of STCP farmer field school training conducted in 2003 with the cocoa farmers of Atwima District of the Ashanti region, Ghana. The focus of the study is on the measurement of changes in behavior with respect to crop husbandry and input usage and the impact on production. The study also measures changes in the participation of children in hazardous tasks which may have occurred as a result of FFS sensitization exercises. The intended utility of this study ... -
On measuring indebtedness of African countries: a stochastic frontier debt production function
(2006)At least since the early 1990s, the problem of Africa’s debt was a recurring theme in the development debate and many suggestions for debt relief have now been implemented. However, a thorough solution is hampered by the existence of multiple ways of scaling debt. This paper provides a framework for comprehensively measuring indebtedness and gives therefore a basis for setting objective principles for debt reduction measures. The paper uses a stochastic frontier production function approach and ... -
