Characterization of maize producing communities in Benin, Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria: West Africa Regional Synthesis Report
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2011-01)Maize is becoming increasingly important as a food security crop in West Africa. However, recurring droughts constitute a continuous challenge to its production. Attempts at addressing the drought problem resulted in the conduct of a participatory community survey of maize production systems with about 20–40% probability of drought risk in four DTMA countries (Bénin Republic, Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria). The project is part of an initiative to develop and disseminate appropriate drought tolerant ... -

Invasive floating water weeds – killing life and commerce
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2010)Weeds by definition are plants that grow in the wrong place. When their seeds or other plant parts are transported to other regions where their natural enemies are absent, they can multiply unhindered. Indigenous plants, especially those that are adapted for invading disturbed areas, can also become weeds. The first category is a particularly good target for classical biological control. Insects, mites and micro-organisms that feed on them are imported from their original area and released against ... -

Characterization of maize producing households in the dry savanna of Mali
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2011-04)Maize is one of the three most important staple foods in Mali. Zones in the country with high potential for producing maize are limited to areas where the probability of drought risk is between 20 and 40%, meaning that recurring droughts have long handicapped maize production. In an attempt to alleviate drought stress on maize production, a household survey was conducted in the two Local Government Areas of Bougouni and Koutiala, both in the Sikasso Region, during the 2007/2008 production period. ... -

The cassava monitoring survey in Nigeria: final report
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2017-02)The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) cofunded the Cassava Monitoring Survey (CMS) project with the objective of documenting the extent of adoption of improved cassava varieties with a rigorous sampling and DNA based identification of improved varieties in Nigeria. For examining the determinants of adoption, the project undertook the following four major tasks: (i) Large-scale household (HH) survey (2500 households from the ... -

Testing alternative methods of varietal identification using DNA fingerprinting: results of pilot studies in Ghana and Zambia
(Michigan State University, 2016-10)Varietal adoption based on household surveys has mostly relied on farmers’ response to varietal identification. This method can give biased estimates if farmers are unable to identify improved varieties as a group or by name, or give names that do not match with the released variety list. To tackle these potential problems other innovative methods have been suggested that require time and resource intensive data collection such as including follow-up questions in the survey instrument to gather ... -

Evidence-based opportunities for out-scaling climate-smart agriculture in East Africa
(2016-10-03)Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is being widely promoted as a solution for food insecurity and climate change adaptation in food systems of sub-Saharan Africa, while simultaneously reducing the rate of greenhouse gas emissions. Governments throughout Africa are writing policies and programs to promote CSA practices despite uncertainty about the ability for practices to meet the triple CSA objectives of CSA. We conducted a systematic review of 175 peer-reviewed and grey literature studies, to ... -
