dc.description.abstract | Yam is the staple food for populations from the Noth-east, Centre and East of Cote d'lvoire. It plays an important role in subsistence cropping in the country. As a result, the present work is devoted to an extensive review of the literature on scientific data gathered on this crop, notably on soil fertility management. The use of mineral and organic manures, as well as agroforestry, cover crops and cultural rotation techniques show that yam responded positively to nitrogen, potassium and organic manure, but not to phosphorus. However fertilization was not found profitable following long periods of natural fallow (> 10 years). Mineral fertilization increased losses, due to damages, when yam tubers are stocked for a long period. The most common yam-based cropping practices were quadrennial and triennial rotations. Agroforestry and cover crops techniques have only been recently introduced in Cote d'lvoire, therefore not sufficiently reported in the literature. |
