Combining ability of tropical maize germplasm in West Africa. III. Tropical maize inbreds
(2000)One hundred elite, open-pedigree tropical and subtropical inbreds of maize (Zea mays L.) that had been screened in 60 tropical trials were evaluated as inbreds and in testcrosses in Nigeria. The 24 superior inbreds among these were chosen to create two diallel sets for evaluation of grain yield and agronomic competence. Included were lines bred in Colombia, Florida, Hawaii, India, Kenya, Nigeria, South Carolina, Texas, and Thailand. The two diallels included 78 hybrids of 13 inbreds with yellow ... -
Influence of thrips prey species on the lifehistory and behaviour of Orius albidipennis (Reuter) (Heteroptera)
(2000)The effects of two diets, i.e., cowpea leaves plus Megalurothrips sjostedti larvae versus cowpea leaves alone, on nymphal development and mortality of Orius albidipennis were studied under controlled laboratory conditions in Benin, West Africa. Nymphal development was longer when O. albidipennis was fed with cowpea leaves only, compared to the diet complemented with M. sjostedti larvae (17.6 days versus 14.8, respectively). Nymphal mortality was very high (78.6%) if fed with cowpea leaves only, ... -
Differential response of cowpea lines to aluminum and phosphorus application
(2000)Two pot experiments were conducted, one to evaluate the levels of tolerance of fifteen cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] lines to aluminum (Al) application, and the second to determine the effect of phosphorus (P) addition on the performance of Al‐tolerant lines (IT 91K‐93–10, IT 93K‐2046–1, and IT 90K‐2 77–2) and Al‐sensitive lines (IT 86D‐719, IT 90K‐284–2, and IT 89KD‐349) in an Alfisol with Al amendment. Fourteen of the fifteen lines tested showed decreased root biomass (between 19 to 81% ... -
One and two dimensional gel electrophoresic identification of African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) seed proteins
(2000)Seed proteins were extracted from the African yam bean (AYB; Sphenostylis stenocarpa), an underutilized West African food legume. One- and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was then used to analyze the albumin fraction, galactose-specific lectins purified on immobilized galactose−Sepharose 4B, and abundant non-lectin seed proteins left over following affinity chromatography. N-terminal sequencing of prominently resolved polypetide bands led to identification of proteins having ... -
Characterization of the seed proteins of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) from Nigeria
(2000)This paper reports the preliminary characterization of seed protein fractions from seven varieties of velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) grown in Nigeria, using sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE). Three of the most abundant polypeptides, with approximate Mr of 23, 26 and 30 kDa, respectively, were further separated by preparative native-PAGE. N-terminal sequencing revealed the presence of the consensus sequence DDREPV-DT–PL that is also present in the soybean Kunitz-type ... -
The African yam bean seed lectin affects the development of the cowpea weevil but does not affect the development of larvae of the legume pod borer
(2000)Artificial feeding assays were used to study the effect of purified galactose-specific lectins from African yam beans (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) on development of larvae of the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) and the legume pod-borer, Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Inhibition of development of C. maculatus was observed when larvae were fed on artificial cowpea seeds containing 0.2%, 2.0% and 5.0% (wt/wt) of dietary lectin. Larval mortality was between 30% ... -
Prospects for microbial control in West Africa
(2000)The prospects for development of microbial control in West Africa are bright, with many stakeholders in plant protection both within and beyond the region becoming increasingly interested. To date however, on the West African market, there are only two microbial products available, and many opportunities remain to be fully explored. Apart from commercially oriented pathways, alternative methods of pathogen propagation and implementation are being studied, to serve the needs of those agricultural ... -
GIS based classification of maize testing locations in West and Central Africa
(2000)Stratifying a broad target growing area of a crop into different ecological zones has been an important first step in plant breeding. To cater for the diverse maize growing environments in West and Central Africa, germplasm development and testing at IITA have been targeted to four agroecological zones broadly defined based on experiences and knowledge of researchers. This study was carried out to group maize testing locations with similar climatic features, and then use the groups to produce a ... -
Pratiques paysannes et utilisation potentielle de Metarhizium flavoviride Gams and Rozsypal en lutte antiacridienne au Niger
(2000)A socio-economic study was executed in South East Niger to determine the conditions under which a novel mycopesticide based on the fungus Metarhizium flavoviride could be introduced for locust and grasshopper control as a possible alternative reducing the use of synthetic chemicals. From the interviews, all farmers estimated locusts and grasshoppers to be one of three major pests. The survey revealed that 93.8% of the farmers conduct collective pesticide applications. About 45.5% of the farmers ... -
An evaluation of sequential sampling plans for the larger grain borer (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and the maize weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and of visual grain assessment in West Africa
(2000)Repeated sampling of rural maize stores in Benin was conducted to evaluate published parameters of a sequential sampling plan for a negative binomial distribution to determine pest status for Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky. A computer program was used to rerandomize the data and evaluate the effects, in terms of average sample number and error rates, of different sampling plan parameter values. With respect to P. truncatus, lower and upper thresholds of 0.2 and ... -
Inheritance of drought tolerance in cowpea
(2000)This study was undertaken to elucidate the nature of inheritance of the two types of drought tolerance in cowpea {Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp} so that the drought tolerant can be effectively used in breeding programme. Three cowpea lines viz TVu 11986 willi ‘Type l' drought tolerance, Dan IIa with ‘Type 2' drought tolerance and TVu 7718 as susceptible to drought were crossed in all possible combinations. The genetic segregation revealed that drought tolerance is a dominant trait and both ‘Type I' ... -
Response of Chromolaena odorata to different tree densities in a tropical agrisilvicultural system. Aboveground biomass production, partitioning, decomposition and nutrient release
(2000)In low-input land-use systems combining timber trees with shade-tolerant understorey crops, it is essential to establish the effects of tree density upon weeds and the contribution of weeds to competition and nutrient cycling. Adjusting tree density may alter weed competition for light, water and nutrients, the storage of nutrients by weeds through growth and the release of nutrients via decomposition of slashed weed residues. The effects are reported of (1) two timber stand densities (TSDs) and, ... -
Economic analysis of croplivestock integration in the northern Guinea savannah of Nigeria
(2000)Research was undertaken on the economics of crop-livestock integration in the Northern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria. The aim of the study was to quantify the reciprocal contributions of crops and livestock and also the factors affecting the integration of crops and livestock production in the area. Field data were collected during the 1996/97 farming season from 150 respondents randomly selected at two locations (Zaria and Bauchi) and classified into crop farmers (CF) and crop-livestock farmers ... -

Leaf properties, litterfall and nutrient inputs of Terminalia ivorensis at different tree stand densities in a tropical timberfood crop multistrata system
(2000)Tree litter fall was monitored for 2 years in two Terminalia ivorensis A. Chev. plantations in the humid tropics of southern Cameroon. The plantations were 6 and 17 years old when they were each thinned to two timber stand densities (TSD) and understorey food crops were introduced. Leaf litter was the predominant litter fraction in all treatments. Treatment means of specific leaf area for T. ivorensis ranged from 83.7 to 100.7 cm2•g-1. Litter-fall production, leaf area per tree, and leaf area index ... -
Poverty and child farm labour in Africa: wealth paradox or bad orthodox
(2006)The link between poverty and child labor has traditionally been regarded as well established but recent researches have questioned its validity, suggesting that child labor is more important in the richest households (wealth paradox). The present study revisits the link between poverty and farm child labor in Africa and aims at testing the paradoxical wealth effect. Using different modeling techniques, the analysis focuses on family-controlled child labor taking place in the cocoa sector of Côte ... -
Charge characteristics of soil organic matter fractions in a Ferric Lixisol under some multipurpose trees
(2000)Soil organic matter (SOM) has a key role in maintaining soil fertility in weathered soils in the tropics. This study was conducted to determine the contribution of different SOM fractions to the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of a tropical soil as influenced by organic matter inputs of different biochemical composition. Soil samples were collected from a 16-yr old arboretum established on a Ferric Lixisol, under five multipurpose tree species: Leucaena leucocephala, Dactyladenia barteri, Afzelia ... -
Nitrogen contribution of five leguminous trees and shrubs to alley cropped maize
(2000)There are abundant local legume trees and shrubs potentially suitable for alley cropping systems in the sub-Saharan Africa, which are yet to be studied. The nitrogen contribution of two years old Albizia lebbeck and S. corymbosato yield of maize grown in alley cropping was compared to that of Senna siamea, Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala in four seasons at Ibadan. Maize shoot biomass and maize grain yield in A. lebbeck alley compared favourably with that in G. sepium and L. leucocephala. ... -
Response of maize (Zea mays) to phosphorus application on basaltic soils in Northwestern Cameroon
(2000)A field trial was conducted on two P sorptive, basaltic soils commonly used for maize production in Northwestern Cameroon. The objective was to determine the maintenance P rates required for adequate P supply in the soils for maize after initial capital dressing applications of P (0, 22, 44, 88 and 132 kg ha-1) in 1991. These were followed by three supplementary P rates – 0, 44 and 88 kg ha-1 in 1992. Three crops of maize (cv COCA) were grown to monitor the availability of the residual P. Experimental ...
