Rapid and mass propagation system for yams (Dioscorea spp.) based on vine cuttings and tissue culture techniques for germplasm collection: onthe job training
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2010)The production of clean planting materials at the genebank for clonal prppagated crops, such as yam, is essential. The trainee, who came from the National Genebank of Kenya, undertook the training program on vine propagation (VP) tissue culture technique for yam in vitro genebanking from 1 october to December 2010. Since yam is not as popular in East Africa as it is in West Africa, the trainee had to initially gain a general understating of the crop before proceeding with the program. After this ... -

Banana diseases and pests: field guide for diagnostics and data collection
(2017)Improvement of banana for smallholder farmers in the Great Lakes Region of Africa This unique project seeks to improve the production and productivity of banana in Tanzania and Uganda, through the development of hybrid banana varieties that are expected to have 30% higher yield compared to the current varieties grown by farmers under the same conditions through improved resistance against key pests and diseases. In particular, the project will strengthen the banana breeding programs in the two ... -

Postflask management of micropropagated bananas and plantains: A manual on how to handle tissue-cultured banana and plantain plants
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 1998)Micropropagation techniques have the potential to deliver large amounts of propagules of vegetatively propagated plantain and banana, enabling the rapid dissemination of land races and new varieties resulting from breeding programs. However, a critical stage in the realization of this potential is postflask management, in order to rear the in vitro plantlets to a stage where field establishment is assured. This manual provides a stage-by-stage practical guide to postflask management beginning at ... -
Integrated pest management in vegetable production: a guide for extension workers in West Africa
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2010)This guide has been produced by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Institut National des Recherches Agricoles du Bénin (INRAB), Cotonou, Benin, with support from the CGIAR Systemwide Program on Integrated Pest Management (SP-IPM), to improve the quality and usefulness of pest management research. This publication was part funded by the ACP-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA). -
The AFNETA alley farming training manual. Volume 1. Core course in alley farming
(ILCA, 1992)This training manual is a collaborative project of IITA, ILCA and ICRAF. The manual draws on articles, training materials, and illustrations prepared by scientists and support staff from the three institutions. It has been written with two readerships in mind. First it is intended for use in AFNETA's training courses and secondly, it is intended for any person interested in practicing or experimenting with alley farming. The topics covered in volume 1, i.e., core course in alley farming are, ... -
The AFNETA alley farming training manual. Volume 2. Source book for alley farming research
(ILCA, 1992)This training manual is a collaborative project of the three international agricultural centres affiliated to the network: IITA, ILCA and ICRAF. The manual draws on articles, training materials, and illustrations prepared by scientists and support staff from the three institutions. The manual is intended for use in AFNETA's training courses, at which African scientists learn how to carry out alley farming research within the framework of AFNETA's collaborative research programs. It is also intended ... -

Soybean diseases: biology, identification, control and management: IITA research guide, No. 40
(1991)More than 100 pathogens attack soybean, but only a third of them are of economic importance. Common yield reductions vary between 10% and 30%. Soybean diseases are caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Disease management is based on several control principles that should be preferably combined in an integrated pest management approach.
