Field manual for the rapid estimation of cowpea leaf stomatal conductance
(2021-03-05)A thermal camera can be easily applied to measure leaf temperature-based indicators, such as stomatal conductance (gs), in large plant populations consisting of different varieties and under different treatments. However, a major difficulty in measuring these indicators is their fluctuation under different meteorological conditions. In this study, a new indicator of gs, GsI, was developed. The calculation of GsI includes the following factors: leaf and air temperatures, relative humidity, and solar ... -
Field manual for rapid and non-destructive shoot biomass evaluations of staked yam
(2021-03-05)A rapid and easy method has been developed to evaluate the shoot biomass of staked yams. This method can reduce the time and cost required to evaluate shoot biomass when compared with destructive sampling methods. Using this new method, more than 200 accessions can be evaluated within 4 h, including the preparation time, while with the conventional methods of shoot sampling, oven drying, and weighing this process would take 3 days. In addition, owing to the non-destructive measurements of the ... -

Rapid and mass propagation system for yams (Dioscorea spp.) based on vine cuttings and tissue culture techniques for germplasm collection: onthe job training
(International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, 2010)The production of clean planting materials at the genebank for clonal prppagated crops, such as yam, is essential. The trainee, who came from the National Genebank of Kenya, undertook the training program on vine propagation (VP) tissue culture technique for yam in vitro genebanking from 1 october to December 2010. Since yam is not as popular in East Africa as it is in West Africa, the trainee had to initially gain a general understating of the crop before proceeding with the program. After this ... -
